HISTORY OF ROUTE TRAVELED ON JUNE 25
  • August 12th, JMcD: Camped at Pine Portage. Angus Shaw and Duncan McGillivray passed then at portage. Have 15 canoes. (Ref. 11, p 100)
  • Clearing at the west end of Gunflint Lake is the end of the Port Arthur, Duluth and Western Railroad. The old bed of the railroad can be seen at several places along Gunflint, Little North and North Lakes. Railroad was built around turn of the century to haul white pine that once stood on the shores of Gunflint Lake. (Ref. 2, p 16)
