Degrade on Basswood Lake     High winds and rain in the morning; rain stopped by noon. Wind decreased and we made the decision at 4:30 to eat supper and break camp. Started paddling at 6:15
Wind Bay on Basswood Lake 8.7   153.3 835 Setup camp at 9:00. Large snapping turtle was preparing to lay eggs at campsite when we arrived.

  • Sigurd Olson made his first canoe trip in this area starting around June 17, 1921 from the southwest end of Basswood thru Knife Lake to Saganaga Lake. (Ref. 17, p. 40)
  • Basswood Lake - name may have come from Indian name for the lake, Bassemenani which means Dried Blueberry Lake. (Ref. 2, p 20)
