August 15th, JMcD: "Waited at Carpe for canoes behind. Mixed nine gallons of Indian Rum it being customary for Burgeois to wet the whistle of every Indian they met on the way." (Ref. 11, p 101) August 14th, JMcD: Camped at the second portage below the end of Knife Lake (Ref. 11, p 101) Isle of Pines -- homestead of Dorothy Moliter. (Ref. 6) Bennie Ambrose -- Had homestead on Otterback Lake. Found "near the bay on the U.S. side". There is a special plaque on the rock cliff on the Canadian side. (Ref. 6, p. 6) Monument Portage: Has log bridge at east end over swamp. Named for large boundary markers along trail. (Ref. 2, p 19)
