It rained all night and when we got up, Paul’s end of the tent was standing in water as was the kitchen area. We slept until 9:00 hoping the rain would stop but it didn’t. It rained off and on all day and was clearing by evening even though there were dark clouds to the west. We had hoped to camp at Garden Creek, but that did not work. Garden Creek is a Cree Indian community within Wood Buffalo National Park. We walked to the store and filled our water containers from a faucet there. When we asked about camping, they said there wasn’t any campground there, but maybe we could camp by the church. When we asked questions about bathroom facilities, they said there was an outhouse by the church but when we walked past it, we saw that one side was missing. I am sure we could have camped there, but it did not feel right. We paddled east and found a campsite a short distance down the river. However, it was the normal problem of the only campsites being on the low side of the river and they were mud flats. The high side presented major problems in getting up the bank and there the ground was covered with downed trees from the ice break-up. We were able to dry our gear that evening. |
