Day 3's Endless Journey
|
We did not look forward to today...a long reservoir paddle. It was a long, hot day but fortunately there was no wind. The first 6.4 miles/10.3 km was a pleasent paddle on the river with a nice current to start. However, the flow decreased as we approached the river delta and all but disappeared on the reservoir. There were loads of carp spawning in the delta and a noted increase in fisherman who hoped to catch other than carp.

The ground crew took advantage of a relatively long first leg. After the canoes left, Kris, Richard and Sharon headed for the town of Townsend. Prior to grocery shopping, they stopped for (another) breakfast at The Mint. Well fortified, they were able to get the necessary supplies and head to the crew change at White Earth Recreation Area. |

As mentioned most of the day was paddling a big lake...it looked huge when driving to the crew change and it looked even bigger when on the water. The day's paddle ended at Shannon boat ramp where the canoes were loaded onto the trailer followed by a short drive to Riverside Campground just below Canyon Ferry Dam. It was hot, but we managed to find shade under shelters to relax and enjoy the evening breese. |

Trips always seem to have non-sencial things stick out in your mind that have absolutely no bearing on the trip. This one was no exception. At the Shannon take-out, several people commented on the bright green house high on the hill overlooking the marina. It was big and ugly and green. It stuck out like a sore thumb. No one could figure out why someone would paint their house that color. After the trip, we (Bill and Sharon) drove back to Helena geocaching on the back roads. We drove past this house and had to chuckle. The house was not painted green. Rather it was the color of the Tyvek-type moisture barrier being installed on a house under construction. |
