CANOEING THROUGH HISTORY

HEADWATERS OF THE MISSOURI RIVER
CARDWELL to COAL BANKS LANDING
June 2 - June 13, 2016

Under the leadership of Bob Groves and Chuck Pike, the Red Rogues came together as a canoe team in 2011 for the David Thompson Columbia Brigade. After the 2011 Brigade, they hosted the Okanagan Brigade in 2012 and have participated in other brigades since that time. One of their members, Kris Townsend, has a passion for Lewis and Clark history and is active with the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center in Great Falls as well as other Lewis and Clark related organizations. He also hosts his own website (Lewis & Clark Today) about their journey as well as other sites.
His passion for Lewis and Clark generated an interest in Bob, Chuck and other team members to do a North Canoe (6-man canoe) trip on the Headwaters of the Missouri River. Kris responded and planned an outstanding trip starting on the Jefferson River at Cardwell, MT, and ending on the Missouri River at Coal Banks Landing about 40 miles east of Fort Benton. With Kris preparing the route details, Bob and Chuck worked with other team members to plan the many other details required for a 11-day, 14-person adventure spanning nearly 300 miles. The following pages show the trip as seen through the eyes and photographs of Bill and Sharon (who took the vast majority of the pictures shown).
