BARREN LANDS CANOE TRIP NP
THAIDENE NENE, NWT

Aug. 28th

Traveled 14.5 miles in a northwest direction. Wind from the northeast. On the water at 9:05...arrived at camp at 4:50

A memorible day...that's canoeing for it wasn't easy! The weather conditions from yesterday got worse. Mist turned to rain, temperatures dropped and we encountered a strong northwesterly wind...cross wind at times, head wind at others.

The morning was misty with a light rain but it was not a problem. We stopped for a couple hour lunch break on the northeast shore. After lunch, we took about a 1.5 mile hike looking for muskoxen and caribou...no luck on seeing animals, but Mother Nature offered other beauty for us to see and enjoy.
Shortly after getting back on the water, we had to cross a couple relatively large bays. The first was about a mile across the mouth and the second about 1.5 miles. Fortunately, we could do some island hopping across the second. The wind had picked up and we had to pay attention when crossing to not get into trouble. We rounded a point into a smaller bay with the hopes of finding a protected campsite. Unfortunately, there was a very shallow area that we could not cross to get to what looked like a good site.

Alex was aware of a small protected site ahead. When we rounded the point, we were heading directly into the wind which had continued to get stronger. We stayed close together and were able to negotiate the big waves to a small inlet. From there it was an easy paddle to a very nicely protected camp site.
Camp was quickly set up and Alex prepared dinner. The rains came and the temperature dropped...you could see your breath while eating dinner. All headed into their tents early tonight.
