The Arctic weather this time of the year can be very unpredictable. To account for this, Alex builds in a few "extra" non-travel days should it be particularly bad. While we had some bad weather, it did not prevent us from canoeing on any day. Thus as we approached the end of the trip, we had an "extra" day. When we awoke to a gloomy, misty day, the decision was made that this would be a good day to not paddle. Most of the group hiked while Scott and Bill decided to "rest" in camp. | ||
Alex has two kitchen boxes for carrying gear. One contains TP, bug spray, hot chocolate, coffee, etc. which participants can use as needed. The other pots, pans and other cooking gear and is off limits to participants. When we arrive at camp, Alex selects the spot for these boxes with a space between them. This is where the eating utensils are placed. Each person selects a colored cup at the start of the trip and it is theirs for the entire trip. Dishes are cold washed in the lake (this is the most environmentally favorable option in this area) for morning and noon and then washed in hot, soapy water at night. Breakfasts consisted of powdered orange juice, coffee/hot chocolate, packets of oatmeal or granola depending on the day and any fruit left over from the previous night's desert. Dinners were a multi-course meal. It started with bannock fry bread that when ready, was placed on a bush or tuft of grass for each person to break off their pieces. Next was soup. That was followed by a onepot meal with canned meat added...good meals. Dessert was freeze-dried fruit or pudding. You had your choice of coffee or hot chocolate to drink. |
