WHITE OTTER WILDERNESS
CANOE TRIP

Aug. 9, 2015

We gathered at the BSA's Donald Rogert Canoe Base west of Atikokan in the afternoon. The first task was winnowing down the amount of gear we had...4 tents not 10, one set of cooking gear, not three, etc. We definitely did not have a shortage of crew gear to choose from. This was packed and then the food organized. Specific meals had been assigned to each person. Thus, the task was organizing the meals for pack in some logical order...thank you Steve...and being sure that we had to necessary staples. All the while there was catching up with what had been going on in the lives of others since last seen

It was then into Atikokan for dinner at the White Otter Inn. The stories continued and it was nearly dark when we got back to base. Two tasks remained...choosing our route and packing our personal gear. The base's map room allowed us to look at options and we picked two. The one used would depend on Monday's weather. We did not want to paddle Clearwater West in a strong or unfavorable wind. It was then back to the cabins to finish organizing our gear and lights out. The latter was figurative as the power had been out since noon and would be out for about 24 hours.
