Another good day, four lakes (Daniel, Shrub, unnamed lake and Canyon, three portages (0.4 mi., 0,1 mi, and 145 yds.) and a campsite on a very small, rocky island. The portage from Daniels to Shrub was the most challenging of the trip. There appeared to be a trail head at the entrance to a small bay, but we chose to check out the north end of the bay. Indeed there was a second trail head there which significantly shortened the portage, but was also much more difficult to make the initial steep ascent to the old road. Near the middle of the portage we again had a choice of which way to go. Neither were good, but while the first one had a steep section leaving the road, it proved to be the better option.
Once again, campsites we at a premium. Or was it that we were too choosy at the start and only after our expectations were lowered did we find an 'acceptable' campsite? We arrived at camp about 2:45 and only set up three tents; you paddled to the south shore of the lake for the bathroom facilities. But life was great and after camp was set up, we had time to relax on a beautiful afternoon. Canoes: Steve and Don, Terry and Jim, Bill and Dick |

Jim's Journal | We were on the water at 9:00 a.m. The first portage was a long and hard one that took a lot of time. We did 9.75 miles today. We are camped on Canyon Lake on a very small island of rock. We could not find a campsite so we are making this island work. We paddled into an east wind straight down the center of the lake but still no white caps. A railroad track is close and we can see the trains go by. It is late evening now and we can hear and see a waterfall on the north shore. Think all of us paddled to the track side for use of its room for private matters. There were three portages today. Liked this canyon lake with its cliffs/bluffs on each side and at least 3 waterfalls so far. | |||||||||||
