Northern Expeditions Canoe Base
Troop 22, Los Alamos, NM
2001

Introduction*

Three Troop 22 crews traveled to Bissett, Manitoba for a fly-in adventure in the Atikaki Wilderness. Travel to the Northern Tier's Northern Expeditions Canoe Base was different than normal. Normally, the entire contingent travels as one. The group flew to Winnipeg. Two adult leaders had commitments after the trip that necessitated them driving to Winnipeg where they met the group.

July 15 The Scouts arrived at the Victoria Motel about 3:45 after an uneventful flight. Most of the Scouts went swimming in the indoor pool with a slide. We ate supper at the motel.

The Mathews had car trouble getting here. They left Los Alamos on Thursday night (July 12) and got to Raton, NM. They returned to Los Alamos and left again Saturday morning (July 14) arriving here today.
July 16 We ate breakfast at the motel dining room. The bus arrived at 8:30 and we left the motel at 9:00. The road was paved for 123 miles and then turned to gravel. We arrived at the Scout Base in Bissett at 12:30. We ate lunch at Wynn's (the San Antonio hotel could not handle that number of unexpected guests). After lunch we returned to the base about 2:15 and checked in.

George Havrilla and I went to the float plane base to make final arrangements for tomorrow. Jim Sussman's crew will leave at 8:00 for Scout Lake. The other two crew will fly to Kautunigan Lake at 9:00 and 10:00. We got our crew gear, checked the tents and packed the gear and food. We then packed our personal gear and decided on a route.

We at supper at Wynn's and went through the orientation program and do's and don'ts. We bought our maps and transferred the route to them.
July 17 We were up at 6:00 and packed our personal gear. It had rained during the night. We were at Wynn's for breakfast at 7:00. After breakfast, I went with Jim's crew to the floatplane base but they could not fly because of the weather. They eventually left at 10:00, our crew left at 10:30 and George's crew flew out last.

July 25 After the crews arrived at Northern Expeditions Canoe Base, checked in gear and showered, we ate lunch at Wynn's.

Dinner was at the San Antonio Hotel. There was a campfire in the evening and we received our patches. We learned that only ~380 Scouts come to Bissett each year. George made a comment that maybe the troop should consider going to Bissett every other year and on alternate years go to Philmont or the Sea Base. It was that kind of trip.
July 26 We were up at 6:00 and packed before going to breakfast at the San Antonio Hotel. The bus arrived just as we got back to he base. We left at 7:55 for Lower Fort Garry on the Red River.

We arrived at Ft. Garry at 10:25. We toured the historical site and had lunch. I attended a story telling program where a Cree lady told a very interesting story. The bus left Ft. Garry at one for the Winnipeg airport.
