Night 264: April 14

Harrison Lake State Park in Fayette, Ohio. After spending yesterday celebrating Grandson Wyatt's second birthday, we were back on the road today. It was a leisurely start and drive to where we camped. A cache at the marker where Michigan, Indiana and Ohio meet was one of four found on our way.

Nights 265 - 269: April 15 - 19

Caesar Creek State Park Campground, Waynesville, Ohio. Camped here five nights. We switched campsites at the campground after nights two and four because of campsite availability. Outstanding campground.

We headed south from Fayette, Ohio to the Dayton area on the 15th. Stopped at the highest point in Ohio and participated in a CITO before arriving at the campground. The 16th and 17th were spent geocaching in the area plus an unplanned dentist appointment. On the 18th and 19th, Zoe competed in the WGI world championship event. Her high school percussion band was the top band in the preliminaries (ten bands) and won the Silver medal in the finals. They finishing 0.6 points behind the Gold metal band.

Camp ERIEZ Campground, Lake City, Pennsylvania. Found caches in nine of the counties shown on the map that were needed for the MaxB 30 State (GC5D8QZ) and Coast to Coast (GC56557) challenge caches. This included the oldest active cache in Pennsylvania (GC184). Unknowingly, geocachers we know from Wisconsin/Arizona were at this cache within a half hour of us.

Also found a Virtual cache (GC9P5B3) at a survey marker used between 1763 and 1767 by Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon to define the Pennsylvania/Maryland border. It became known as the Mason-Dixon Line.

Geocaching in Northern Wisconsin
The "be flexible trip"
September 18 - 22

Nights 295: September 18

Connor Lake State Campground, Loretta, Wisconsin. Stopped to find the oldest active cache in Rusk County (GC759C}. It was a two-mile round trip hike to the river campsite on the Flambeau River where the cache was hidden. Very nice hike.

Night 296: September 19

Copper Falls State Park, Mellen, Wisconsin. The plan was to drive to the boat ramp on the Turtle-Flambeau Flowage, canoe to the oldest Iron County cache, then head to Copper Falls State Park to camp and geocache. However, some critical parts of our Pac Boat had deteriorated since last using and we were unable to assemble it and canoe to the cache. Headed to Copper Falls State Park.

Night 297: September 20

Camped along a Flambeau River State Forest service road in the far north-east corner of Rusk County, Wisconsin. Last night Bill discovered he had left his geocaching bag at a previous stop, probably at the Rusk County oldest geocache. We decided to find the Copper Falls WGA geocache and then drive back to see if we could find the bag. We made the two-mile round trip hike to the site, but the bag was not there. Decided to camp where we parked the camper. Found out later that the bag had been talken to the local police department and I pick it up there.

Night 298: September 21

Top O' the Morn Resort and Campground, Iron River, Wisconsin. Flexibility continues. We looked at the map and decided to head to the WGA Fall Campout at Pattison State Park near Superior even though our cabin was considerably closer. Spent time at the park visiting with fellow geocachers and finding geocaches at the Park. A special find was G'Night, Comkelp (GCAV77G), a memorial geocache for a geocaching friend who recently passed away. We then headed out to find the oldest cache in Douglas County, Pokegama Trail Cache (GCG1R7). It was along a mountain bike trail and the hike to and from the cache was great.
We thought about staying in a motel, but available rooms were over $200. Headed east and eventually we found a campground with openings. Arrived and set up camp well after dark.

September 22

Drove home today. Stopped for the oldest geocache in Bayfield County and then made our way home through Hayward. Did stop for a few caches. Great trip even with the needed 'flexibility' changes.

Arizona - Hawaii
October 23 - December 9

Night 299: October 23

Camped at Worth County Lake Park, Iowa. Left home after lunch and started our trip with a FTF cache in Eau Claire to mark our start. Found an interesting cache in Minnesota and finished the day with the Cache Across America - Iowa. Found a nice campground nearby.

Night 300: October 24

Camped at Big Sioux Recreation Area, Brandon, South Dakota. The distance covered was not far, but it was a busy geocaching day. Sixteen finds in three states including two webcams and Iowa's High Point cache where a license plate display showed our destination. Arrived at the campground just as the Park Rangers were closing the check-in office.

Night 301: October 25

Camped at Summit Lake Recreation Area, Tekamah, Nebraska. Another busy day with a variety of interesting, educational caches of multiple types. But the favorite was My Little Jar of Unicorn Farts (GC337VK)...pictures above.

October 26

Stayed at America's Best Value Inn, Beatrice, Nebraska. Geocaches found: 12. A Library cache, the Cache Across America - Nebraska, a couple Jasmer caches and several caches along the Oak Creek Challenge Trail where we had cached before.

Night 301: October 27

We enjoyed our visited to the Eisenhower Presidential Library and Museum. About the only thing that hadn't changed since the last time Bill visited was the boyhood home. The graves were outside at that time.

Camped at Winfield City Lake, Winfield, Kansas. We found some caches including Cache Across America - Kansas. It was near dark when were arrived at our campsite.

Night 302: October 28

Camped at KOA Amarillo, Texas. Traveled through parts of Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas today. Found caches in all states including a Kansas Jasmer Challenge and the Oklahoma Cache Across America.

Night 303: October 29

Camped at Happy Trails RV Park, Moriarty, New Mexico. Stopped for caches along the way including one at the midpoint of old Route 66. But once again we had to be flexible. We planned on heading southwest from Santa Rosa, but Sharon's iPhone stopped working. The nearest Verizon dealer was Albuquerque, so headed there. Replacing the sim card corrected the problem. Checked where we might say and found the Happy Trails RV Park in Moriarty. Headed back east to camp and refigure our route for tomorrow.

Night 304: October 30

Camped at City of Rocks State Park, Faywood, New Mexico. We had three must find geocaches today -- Cache Across American - New Mexico and caches in Lincoln and Sierra counties. Made the necessary finds and also saw some places we want to visit in the future...lava beds, Trinity Site and more. We had camped in City of Rocks SP on a previous trip...one of our favorite campgrounds.

October 31

Todd's. Drove from New Mexico to Todd's. Stopped for a few caches including one in Globe where a gentleman stopped to ask if we needed any help and talked about the history of the cache.

While in Hawaii, our camper's home was Todd's. For our Hawaiian adventures, click Hawaii

Found some virtual/Earthcaches at the state capital and we started to get ready for Thanksgiving. Visited with Jill and Tim in evening.

November 28:

Thanksgiving with the family at Jill and Tim's. That's what it is all about.

November 29:

Hiked South Mountain trail with Todd, Lisa and Zoe. Picked up Sushi and BBQ for dinner at Todd's. Played games in the evening.

November 30:

Geocached south of Casa Grande for Cache Across America cache and a few challenge caches on an irrigation ditch road. Did laundry and packed for drive home. Joined Jill and Tim for dinner at Los Dos Molinos. Good New Mexico food!

Night 305: December 2

Camped at USA RV Park, Gallup, New Mexico. Had a later breakfast with Todd at Waffle House. Started our drive home about 11:30. Stopped for a couple caches as we made our way to Gallup via Payson and Holbrook. Arrived at campground about 7:30.

Night 306: December 3

Camped at KOA Journey, Las Vegas, New Mexico. Left our campsite in Gallup about 8:30 and drove to Las Vegas, NM arriving at seven. Found eleven caches along the way. Had lunch at Los Cuates in Albuquerque.

Night 307: December 4

Camped at Black Mesa State Park, Kenton, Oklahoma. Drove about 200 miles today, most of it off the Interstate. Found geocaches along the way including a touching memorial cache. Had enjoyable conversations at a couple stops. Met a non-geocaching couple at a bench mark virtual stop and must have talked with then for fifteen minutes or more. Then we stopped for something to eat at a Cafe/Mercantile in Kenton. The place was closed and we got back into the truck. As we were about to leave, a lady walked up and asked if we needed anything. She was the owner and said she would open up the store, but would she would only be able to cook a few things on the menu. Accepted the offer. What an experience. The store was obviously shut down for the season and she had to search here and there for utensils, ingredients, etc. She then visited with us while we ate and we learned much about her life. After the meal, it was off to the campground where we saw several deer in the campground including a couple of young bucks sparing with each other.

Night 308: December 5

Camped at Meade State Park, Meade, Kansas. Got a late start because of an online commitment back home. One of the first caches found was called The Bone. It was located by an actual Dinosaur bone that had been mounted on a concrete pedestal near the highway. It was one of over 15,000 excavated from a nearby pit. Found caches in three Oklahoma counties while driving on the very straight High-way 412. Instead of searching for caches in other needed Oklahoma countines, we changed plans and headed north to camp at Meade State Park. Had the park to ourselves.

December 6

Stayed at America's Best Value Inn Motel, Ellsworth Kansas. It was late and decided to get a motel for the night. Found caches in eight Kansas counties including two Pratt county Wherigo Hangman caches that Sharon solved. One of the more interesting caches was placed in a cattle pen on a working ranch. Fortunately, there were no cattle present today.

Night 309: December 7

Camped at Waubonsie State Park, Hamburg, Iowa. We found seven caches in the last five Kansas counties we had targeted on our drive home. After driving north through Kansas, we turn east in Nebraska finding six more caches in five counties. One was placed where six man football was originated...thank you, geocaching, for bringing us here. Once we crossed the Missouri River into Iowa we checked out Waubonsie SP; the campground was essentially empty.

Night 310: December 8

Camped at Red Haw State Park, Chariton, Iowa. The emphasis today was finding caches in counties needed in the southwest corner of Iowa. We successfully checked off eight. Last night of our trip.

December 9
Final day of the trip. Stopped to visited friends in Cedar Falls and picked up a few caches as we drove home. A cache in Toledo, Iowa was nice as was the location. A poem written by Richard Cooper said so much about rural America. (Move curser over the center picture to read the poem.) Cooper grew up on a farm near the tree and sculpture. Arrived home about 7:30.
FANTASTIC TRIP
Flew to Hawaii visiting three islands. Spent Thanksgiving with family in Arizona. On our drive to/from Arizona we covered over 5300 miles. And we found over 300 geocaches on our 48-day trip!
