Wind Creek State Park, Alexander City, AL. Canoed Hatchet Creek.

We stopped at the site where the Freedom Riders bus was attacked on May 14, 1961. We camped at DeSoto State Park, Fort Payne, AL.

Canadian Sesquicentennial Trip

May 24 to August 11

80 days, 21 rivers canoed in 10 provinces and 2 states, over 13,000 miles traveled

May 24

Drove from home to Frankfort, SD where we camped at Fisher Grove State Park.

May 25

Canoed James River. Camped at Doyle Memorial Park, Wishek, ND.

May 26

Found oldest cache in ND, visited Fort Mandan and David Thompson Memorial on Souris River. Camped at Ward County Settlers Park, Burlington, ND.

May 27

Drove to McLaren Regional Park, Richmond, SK

May 29

Found oldest cache in Alberta. Camped at Elk Island National Park, Fort Saskatchewan, AB. First time this trip that we arrived at campsite before 9:00 pm.

June 1

Camped along Blaeberry River where we got married in 2012, Blaeberry, Saskatchewan. Our wedding papers were signed on the hood of our truck.

June 2

Camped at Green Lake Provincial Park, Thompson-Nicola, BC. Wildlife seen up close and personal included a hunting snake and deer.

June 3

Camped at Blue Cedar RV Park, Prince George, BC. Joined up with fellow members of the Amisk team.

Sesquicentennial travel and canoeing from Ft. Saint James to the Rideau Canal on Canada Day


June 4 - 5

Camped at Cottonwood Park, Ft. St. James, BC where the Fort to Fort Brigade teams assembled.

June 6

First day Brigade. Canoed to Bison Ranch, BC

June 7

Brigade visited a sacred Chinlac First Dations ground while canoing to a campground near old Isle Pierre ferry, BC

June 8

The Fort to Fort Brigade ended today. We canoed to Prince George where we were welcomed by a crowd at the take out. We then Pruden Provincial Park, BC where we camped.

June 9 - 12

The ninth was a travel day to a Lake Abraham campsite, AB. The site served as a base camp while we canoed the North Saskatchewan River.

June 13 - 14

The 13th was a combined canoeing and moving day. We were greeted at Rockey Mountain House and our arrival made the local newspaper the next day. Bill made the front page! After the festivities and provided food, we headed to Danny and Joanne's ranch where we camped for two nights. It was about 15 miles east of Rocky Mountain House. The 14th was an off day.

June 15

413 miles drive across the prairies to Pike Lake Provincial Park campground, Pike Lake, SK

June 16

Quick paddle from Pike Lake PP to the Saskatoon Canoe and Kayak Club takeout. Time for shopping, relaxing, cooking and chores at the RV16 Park campground, Saskatoon, SK

June 17

Drove from Saskatoon to Kamsack geocaching along the way. Found a cache on the place honoring Glenn Hall in his home town of Humbolt, SK. Entertained by the Rocky Moutain Vouageurs team with a Pirates of the Saskatchewan skit. Camped at Duck Mountain Motel/RV Park, Kamsack, SK

June 18

Canoed Assiniboine River from Road 357 bridge to Pyott's West Campground, Roblin, MB

June 19

Canoed from our campsite to Asessippi Provincial Park, drove to the campground at Russell Peace Park, Russell, MB. The flags represent the nationalities of people living in the Russell area.

June 20

Drove to Parc Cartier campground, Ste. Agathe, MB with a stop at Karl and Jackie's. Fitting place to camp as it is named for the Father of Confederation; this trip is celebrating the 150th Anniversary of Confederation.

June 21 - 22

Camped two nights at Champaign RV Park, Lac du Bonnet Ste., MB. Wet canoe on the Red River to THE FORKS on the 21st, nice canoe on the Winnipeg on the 22nd.

June 23 -24

Drove to Kenora on 23rd. Next day we visited Kenora and canoed on Lake of the Woods with the Red Rogues. Camped both nights at Ted and Rita's near Kenora, ON

June 25

Drove 302 miles to KOA campground in Thunder Bay, ON

June 26

Drove 310 miles to Good Time Sam campround, Wawa, ON with a break to paddle on Lake Superior from Red Rock Marina.

June 27

It was a long, 502 mile drive to Pine Valley Resort, Stonecliffe, ON. Shopped, geocached and had dinner on our way to the campground on the Ottawa River.

June 28

Canoed the Ottawa River 31 miles from our campsite to the Rapides-Des-Joachims dam. Camped at Auberge Lodge, Les Guides De La Valle Dumone, QC

June 29

Canoed 22 miles in ever increasing rain and cold to Petawawa Hertiage Village, Petawawa, ON. Treated to a pig-roast feast and entertainment.

June 30 - July 1

Drove to Wesley Clover Campground, West of Ottawa, ON on the 30th. July 1st was Canada Day and we canoed down the Rideau Canal to Vistoria (Asinabke) Island in the Ottawa River.

On to Newfoundland


July 2

The teams headed home. Attended a geocaching event and met 2008 David Thompson Brigade team mates. Camped at Fitzroy Provincial Park, Fitzroy Harbour, ON.

July 4

We stopped at Mount Royal to visit the David Thompson/Charolette Small grave sites on our way to Camping de la Martiniere, Levis, QC located next to the old fort.

July 5

Long drive with a few stops and some wildlife on Highway 108. Camped along highway at the site of an old ranger cabin. "Mosquitoville", NB

July 6

Another long drive to Mira River Provincial Park, NS where we camped. Stopped at Kouchiboouguac National Park to check out the Red Chairs. Ready for the noon ferry to Newfoundland on the seventh.

July 7

Drove to campsite at Barachois Pond Provincial Park, Stephenville Crossing, NL after taking ferry to Channel-Port aux Basques.

July 8

Drove north along the coast stopping visit Gros Morn National Park where we hiked to a set of Red Chairs. It was then on to St. Barbe RV Park, St. Barbe, NL where we camped.

Canada Red Chairs
In 2011, team members at Gros Morne National Park came up with the idea to place 18 sets of Adirondack chairs in lesser-known, but just as stunning locations, inviting visitors to enjoy and share on social media. They even ran a contest where the first people to find all 18 pairs won their very own red chairs to enjoy. Today, the iconic red chairs can be found in over 100 locations administered by Parks Canada. (From Parks Canada website.)

July 9

Sight seeing and geocaching as we drove to Mountain Waters RV Park, Portland Creek, NL

July 11

Hiked to Western Brook Ponds for the boat ride. That was followed by finding a campsite near the Humber River put in for canoeing it on the 12th. Camped at George's Ski World, Steady Brook, NL

July 14 - 15

The Brigade arrives at Welcome Center Camping area, Florenceville-Bristol, NB

July 16

Canoed from Florenceville-Bristol to Connell Park campground, Woodstock, NB with a lunch break in Hartland.

July 17

Canoed from Woodstock to Nackawic, NB and camped at the Big Axe park. Nackawic's Canada Day fireworks were rained out and they rescheduled it to coincide with the Brigade's arrival.

July 18

We were greeted by the Lieutenant Governor and her husband who also hosted a lunch for the Brigade, Maliseet Elders and others. Sharon and Ellie (teammate) were selected to review the New Brunswick 104th Regiment ceremonial changeing of the guard in Officers Sauare. We camped on the Government House grounds, Fredericton, NB

July 19

Camped at Town Office, Gagetown, NB

July 20

Amisk Lake Voyageur team at Kawanis Oak Point Campground, Oak Point, NB

July 21 - 22

On the 21st, the brigade canoed to the Royal Kennebecasis Yacht Club in St. John. On the 22nd, we canoed the Reversing Falls to a welcoming ceremony in St. John that was the end of the brigade. Camped both nights at the athletic field, University of New Brunswick - St. John, NB

July 23

Stopped at the Reversing Falls as we left St. John and Fundy National Park as we drove to the campground at Cape Tormentine Beach, NB

July 24 - 26

Camped at Sunset Campground, Cavendish, PEI. The Confederation Brigade canoed three rivers. Visited with a friend Sharon meet on a previous trip to PEI.

July 27

Camped at Northumberland Provencial Park, Belle River, PEI. The Brigade gather for a group picture, canoed the Hillborough River and said our good byes. It was then time to start our trip home.

Heading home


July 29

Headed to Bible Hill, NS to see Junior Sisk play. Made a stop in Truro before arriving.

July 30 - 31

Camped at Kejimkujik National Park, Maitland Bridge, NS. Stopped to find Canada's oldest active geocache (GCBBA) and visited Lunenburg on the way to the park. Canoed two days and found the Park's Sesquicentennial Red Chairs while canoeing.

Aug. 1

Our campground was in Cap-Pele, NB. Noticed the Acadian flag and a CUBS flag in the area.

Aug. 2

Camped at My Brother's Place campground in Houlton, ME. Drove across New Brunswick with stops in Shedrac and Fredericton. While getting gas in Fredericton, a gentleman came up and starated a conversation. We learned that a bar just up the street had a display on the 1967 Canadian voyageur canoe race. It was a must stop for us as we have met paddlers who canoed in that race.

Aug. 3

Camped at Trool Valley Campground, Farmington, ME. On the way there we passed a McDonald's that had Lobster Rolls. Of course we had to check them out.

Aug. 4

Sightseeing and geocaching on our way to Elmore State Park, Vermont

Aug. 5

Lakewood Campground, Swanton, Vermont

Aug. 6

Canoed to Lake Champlain; camped at Cedar Point State Park, Clayton, New York

Aug. 7

Stopped at Sackets Harbor Battlefied site. While there, we found an interesting geocache. This is not the first encounter with N.B. 104th Regiment on this trip (see July 18 and https://www.stjohnriver.org/). Camped at Golden Hill State Park, Clayton, New York

Aug. 8

Crossed back into Canada and rekindled old memories and made new ones. Stopped at the site of the 1955 World Boy Scout Jamboree that Bill attended, located the Fort George Red Chairs, and found the oldest geocache in Ontario (GC2B4) before camping at Brant Park, Brant, Ontario

Aug. 9

Straits State Park, St. Ignace, Michigan. Last night of our FANTASTIC trip.
