Description | A ten-mile moon-lit night hike along forest service roads with views of Albuquerque, Santa Fe and Cochiti Lake. Elk and deer can be seen in this area. |
Difficulty | Easy |
Comments | This trail offers "something different". The entire hike is on Forest Service roads. It is recommended that the hike be taken near full moon. With a full moon, flashlights are not required and a different view of the country is obtained. Chose your dates and starting times carefully. Moonrise times change rapidly and much of the beauty of the hike comes when hiking under a full moon. The hike should not be started earlier than 7:00 p.m. FR 289 intersections FR 287 about 2.5 mi. from the start. Keep hiking straight (south) on FR 289. About 7 miles from the start, FR 289 intersects FR 142. Turn left (east) on FR 142; FR 289 goes right (west). There are numerous unimproved campsites located in the Santa Fe National Forest along Forest Road 289. The first 2.2 miles of FR 289 passes through Bandelier National Monument and private land; camping is not permitted along this stretch. There is no water available, so you must bring your own supply. |
