LIZARD HEAD TRAIL

13-Mile Backpack/Hike Combination

Description The Lizard Head trail offers you the opportunity to hike in one of the least used wildernesses in our area. Hike through scenic areas to a base camp at Navajo Lake, CO, with four 14ers in the immediate area. From your base camp pass through fragile tundra area to a saddle at the base of Mount Wilson. From here you can see the Silver Pick Trail and "hotel" ruins to the north.
Difficulty Difficult
Comments This trail allows you to hike to one of the most beautiful areas in Southern Colorado. Camp only at established camp sites in the Navajo Lake Basin; "no trace" camping is an absolute must. If you listen carefully, you can often hear rock slide/avalanches in the surrounding mountains peaks. While hiking to the saddle at the base of Wilson Peak, you will be passing through fragile tundra. Enjoy the miniature beauty of the area; treat it very carefully.

Mount Wilson is a Class 3 peak and IS NOT PART OF THIS HIKE. If you wish to climb Mount Wilson as a separate activity, study information about climbing the mountain prior to the campout and DO NOT TAKE SCOUTS OR ADULTS WHO ARE INEXPERIENCED MOUNTAIN CLIMBERS.

Requirements
Drive to Dolores, CO on Colorado 145. About 12.5 miles northwest of Dolores turn left (north) on Forest Road 535. The road follows the West Dolores River past the ghost town of Dunton (private property) to the trail head for Trail 635. There is a parking area at the trail head, but vandalism by militant environmentalists has reportedly occurred here in the past. You might check at the Ranger Station in Dolores for further information.
