5-Mile Hike

Description The Faulty Loop Trail is ideal for first year Scouts and can be used for the 1st Class hiking requirement. Several kinds of plants can be seen on this trail as well as interesting geological formations, one of which the trail is named for.

Comments This trail gives new Scouts the opportunity to participate in the Order of the Arrow trails program and can be used for the 1st Class hiking requirement. It is located at lower elevations on the east side of the Sandia Mountains through juniper-pinon country. A variety of plants can be identified along the trail. The trail uses the same trail head as the southern end of the Sandia Crest Trail which offers the opportunity to coordinate activities for older and younger scouts.

Requirements
Exit Interstate 40 at the Tijeras exit. Turn north on New Mexico 14 and go under the interstate and drive to the north end of Canyon Estates Subdivision. Parking is available at the trailhead. The referenced Forest Service map has a good map of the subdivision.
